In the summer of 2001, I viewed a number antique ecclesiastical
copes (capes) on display in European museums. One 14th century
cope, worn out after centuries of use, had been cut up and used
in three new vestments. In the 19th century, those three vestments
were taken apart and the original cope was reassembled. In the 20th
century, what remained of the cope was stitched to velvet for display.
