On September 8, 2001 we left Long Beach Island, New Jersey aboard our
Mariner Yacht '36, Fandango for our annual two-week sailboat cruise. We
were going to circumnavigate Long Island and pass right by the Towers
along the East River of Manhattan on our way back to our homeport. We
were anchored in Montauk harbor at the north tip of Long Island when we
learned of the tragic events.
As we continued on our voyage, we went ashore a few times and looked
for sports bars to watch CNN. We listened to NPR when we were able to
tune it in, and we were spared the constant viewing of the video tape
that so many of our friends have talked about.
For the duration of our cruise, we flew our Yacht Ensign at half-mast.
The marine Ensign is a version of the American Flag. It has an anchor
surrounded by a circle of thirteen stars. This quilted wall hanging is
our tribute to all the souls lost on September 11, 2001.
