Quilt Quest Book by ExpresSew
Review By Veronica Cox

This is a great book for kids. My 8 and 10-year-old granddaughters and an 11-year-old neighbor got together this summer to make these quilts. They didn't quite make it as big as the original quilt, which was 80 squares. They were bored cutting, so we settled on 36 squares since this was their first sewing experience. We also decided we would only use 2 colors.

All of the instructions were easy to follow. Groove Girl, the “star” of the books from ExpresSew, helps you through the directions. There are simplified diagrams designed with young people in mind. The only thing they had problems with was the pinning. The instructions tell you to pin, but don’t show you how to pin. This is ok, if you have someone that can tell them and show them, but if there is no one to show them, it might present a problem.

We decided to add a border to make it a little bit bigger. At this point, I didn't feel they were capable of doing a binding, so we decided to sandwich the quilt with right sides together and batting to the inside and sew it down. We turned it inside out, and they spent an evening tying the quilts. The girls spent 3 days working on these great little quilts. We only spent a few hours a day on them, and they had a lot of fun. Now they're 14 year old sister wants to make one, hers will probably be a lot bigger and have a binding.

I would highly recommend this book as a book for first timers or kids, and especially teenagers. Get together your quilting friends and their daughters or granddaughters, and have a Quilt Quest using this book designed especially to encourage young people to quilt.
