History of construction:
The collaborative construction of this quilt reflects the community in which
the creators of this quilt reside. Offering supportive campus living for
adults with developmental disabilities, New England Village is a private,
non-profit residential community nestled in the quaint New England town of
Pembroke, Massachusetts.
The concept of creating the quilt was introduced to a group of residents -
now emerging artists - by their art instructor,
Melanie Rose-Zagwyn. The
inspiration for the House Quilt came directly from the HGTV website - the
2002 quilt block of the month project, "Strolling the Block." The quilt's
materials came from a collection of donated fabrics which had been stored in
the Village's art room closet (often referred to as a treasure trove of
artistic inspiration). Many staff members who are also quilters and sewing
wizards, lent technical advice as well as construction materials. Melanie
adapted the original quilt design by creating reversible templates which
the New England Village artists traced, cut and fused themselves. Each
artist selected fabrics and design elements which best represented their
individuality. Although the quilt is currently on display, the quilt is
actually a work in progress. Future plans for the quilt include the addition
of decorative stitching to the appliqué sections and adding a border edging.
