Given a challenge to create a contemporary art quilt, In Harmony-Sun,
the first panel of six, was born. Inspiration came from a variety of
hand-dye and batik fabrics and the freedom of designing by a combination
of strip piecing and machine applique.
This quilt was created with the novice in mind-calling on simple
shapes and mimicking a leaf motif in the fabrics to fashion the
three primary visuals in the quilt. To create more texture, the
border pieces were layered as three, raw-edged squares on top of
each other.
Machine quilting adds even more texture with stippling on the tree
trunk; a spiral design on the sun and "sun rays" drawn in. To give
the quilt more stability and evenness, it was necessary to stitch
in the ditch. That's the hidden surprise to this quilt…it doesn't
appear to be heavily quilted until it's viewed from the back. And,
even though the other panels haven't yet made it to the design board
and into fabric interpretations, the next panels have been considered.
So what's the next panel? In Harmony-Life.
