Melanie Rose-Zagwyn is a mixed media artist and art educator with a Fine Arts degree from the Parsons School of Design in New York City and the Massachusetts College of Art. Believing that within each person lies a glimmer of greatness, Melanie focuses on each person's abilities striving to provide art materials and instruction necessary for self expression. She believes that through the freedom to explore the creative self, each artist's method of expression becomes his or her own distinctive signature.
Being an educator as well as an artist is of equal importance in the facilitation of these “distinctive signatures”- both require experimentation, planning and modification of original intent. Facilitating creativity with adults who happen to have developmental disabilities require these elements in multitude. Melanie is the Art Program Coordinator at New England Village, a private, non-profit residential community located in Pembroke, Massachusetts which offers campus living for adults with developmental disabilities. Modifying the application or assemblage of the media is a critical part of individualizing art lessons at the Village – consideration must always be given to a person’s cognitive and sensory ability which might include a vision, hearing or motor impairment. Art classes meet weekly with additional evening and weekend art workshops offered for Village residents as well as for individuals with developmental disabilities from nearby communities.
As a result of their artistic gains, the emerging artists of New England Village, exhibit and sell their work in the community on a regular basis. The Village’s Graphic Designer, Judy Randall, assists Melanie and the artists in creating a marketable line of greeting cards.
