I began quilting in 1978. This just seemed to be the logical next step in a long time love affair with fabric, color, and creativity. I didn’t play dolls. I sewed for my dolls. In college I majored in Home Economics with an emphasis in clothing and textiles. I married in 1968, had two children, all the while sewing for the kids, myself, the house, occasionally even my husband. I tried every craft that came along from needlepoint, to macrame, to basket making, doll making, ornaments, etc. When my youngest child started kindergarten I decided I had time to take a quilting class. I didn’t walk out of that class, I floated out of that class. I had found my lifelong passion. 25 plus years later I’m still as obsessive, compulsive, and in love with the art and craft of quilting as I was in 1978. First I was a student, then I taught locally, both through the adult education program and at the local quilt shops. In 1983 I began venturing out of San Diego to teach. For the next 8 years I taught locally and out of area. I was named “Quilt Teacher of the Year”, by the Professional Quilter Magazine in 1985. Beginning in 1991 I had to give up my local teaching commitments, and concentrate on the travelling. In 1991 my first book, Designing New Traditions in Quilts, came out. I now have 13 books, including The Art of Classic Quiltmaking, which I co-authored with Harriet Hargrave, Setting Solutions, Twist ‘n Turn, and LeMoyne Stars Made Easy. I have contributed to numerous magazines including Quilter’s Newsletter, AQS, Quilting Today, and Traditional Quiltworks. I am the creator of the Design Challenge Column in Traditional Quiltworks Magazine (now Quiltworks Today). The focus of this column is to share the variety of quilts one can make with the same, very traditional block. My emphasis, whether in my teaching or my writing, is to encourage quilters to be creative in their own right. I teach techniques. I provide patterns only as a jumping off point for each quilter. I like to use visual examples, real quilts, to inspire creativity. I feel incredibly blessed to be able to do something I love so much and be able to share it with others. I continue to quilt and look for new ideas and concepts that I can bring to quilters everywhere I currently live in a suburb of San Diego, California with my husband, George. I have two grown, married children, and two extraordinary grandchildren. www.sharyncraig.com
