A Quilter's Book of Baskets
By Dori Hawks
ASN (American School of Needlework)

Basket blocks are on the list of Dori Hawks's favorites. It is no wonder she would choose basket blocks to be the subject of her first book publication.

"A Quilter's Book of Baskets" is an instructional manual, leading a quilter step-by-step through the creation of six appliqué basket blocks and six pieced basket blocks. Beginning with a supply list of tools and how to choose fabric, Dori also leads a beginning quilter through the basic steps of layering, basting, and finishing of a quilt.

It is evident that Dori Hawks is a thorough teacher as you read her explanations of hand quilting and machine quilting and numerous methods of accomplishing appliqué. This book contains many illustrations, effective compliments to her teachings.

"A Quilter's Book of Baskets" includes 12 basket block patterns. Dori simplifies the process by numbering each piece and including an assembly diagram. There are 5 quilt projects in the book. Four are wall hangings and one is a large sampler quilt using all 12 blocks.

I recommend this book to all appliquérs. It is especially good for a beginner of applique. Each piece of her blocks are large and rounded--a good place to start. The pieced blocks go from simple to more advanced designs, including one titled Dori’s Basket.

Look for this book at your favorite quilt shop or visit www.AnniesAttic.com.

Dori Hawks had been in love with sewing ever since she watched her grandmother sew holiday outfits and doll clothes for her and her sister. Once a teacher for Stretch 'N Sew, her natural love of fabrics led her to quilting. Having taught some form of needlework for the last 35 years, she of course began teaching quilting, which led to her involvement with all types of quilting.

Now a resident of Florida, Dori travels to teach at various quilt guilds and shops, and has been selected several times to teach at the Houston International Quilt Festival. She has been heavily involved with various quilt guilds - on the board, past president, head of shows and head of a group that provides quilts for children of abused and homeless women. Dori is also one of the founding members of the Quilters of South Carolina, a statewide organization. For several years, she also held the position as the Executive Director of the International Quilt Association based in Houston. They have memberships worldwide and present the judged show at the International Quilt Festival every year.

Once a novice in the computer world, Dori is now a co-owner and editor of a subscription-based online quilting magazine called the QuilterCommunity.com. It is a place quilters can find unique quilt patterns, wonderful articles on various quilting subjects by a group of special authors, a quilt shop to purchase you quilting needs, a quilting event locator to use when traveling and a community area where quilters can share ideas.
