In 1860, daring young men on horseback sped day and night along a 2,000 mile
route to carry the mail. Every 12 miles, a rider would swing down from his
horse, grab the mail bag, mount a fresh horse and dash off toward the next
station. The courage and the spirit of the Pony Express riders inspired me
to capture in fabric the energy and excitement felt by the men and animals
as each rider approached a station
