Woman's Work: Making Quilts - Creating Art Video Review posted: 6/6/2004

"Woman's Work: Making Quilts-Creating Art takes us on a journey into the lives of 10 women who have made fabric and fiber art a major part of their lives. They make “art quilts”, created to be hung on a wall rather than used on a bed. Their stories inspire conversation about the creative process of artists everywhere.”

This is a documentary film of ten fabric and fiber artists, called the Faultline Studio Artists, which are all located in the San Francisco Bay Area. The participants are: Sondra Von Burg, Claudia Comay, Marcia Stein, Karin Lusnak, Sue Mary Fox, Marilyn Felber, Nina Shortridge, Gerrie Peterson, Nancy Pagani and Charlotte Grossman.

Each speaks from her studio, leading the viewer step-by-step through her unique process of creating her art. One sees each artist dye, paint, and even sculpt fabric, using a variety of tools.

The format allows the viewer to be seen numerous times, as each directs her dialogue to nine subject one at a time. In the beginning, each artist discusses her background and what led her to quilting. This is then followed by the discussion of the remaining subjects: Tools, Ideas, Definition of Quilt, Lifestyle, Selling, Failure and finally Closing Remarks. By the time the end of the video arrives, the viewer can easily identify each artist's work in the additional slideshow gallery.

Charlotte Grossman created the film, as the culmination of a career-long dream. She is "currently seeking funding to continue ‘Woman’s Work’ as a documentary series, each show focusing on women artists working in different media that are often overlooked by the mainstream."

This video is educational, entertaining, and inspiring. It would be an asset to a video collection and would be a great pleasure for groups, as well, as individuals. I think for most of us visiting personal studios of fabric artists is a unique experience. I consider it a “must see” for all.

The film debuted on television in the San Francisco area on March 28, 2004. Beginning in October 2004, it will be distributed by American Public Television.

"Artist Biography: Filmmaker Charlotte Grossman is an Emmy Award winning film and video editor living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. Originally from New York, she has edited documentaries on both coasts for ABC, CBS, NBC (she co-edited the documentary for NBC titled "He Makes Me Feel Like Dancin'" which won an Academy Award), and PBS, as well as TBS and Discovery Channel."
