The Stori Of Beaded Embellishment
by Mary Stori
Published by That Patchwork Place/Martingale Publishing
"Developed specifically with quilters in mind, these
savvy tips and techniques for beading on fabric will show you how fun it is to
embellish your quilts with texture and detail." Mary Stori calls herself a self-taught
embellishment enthusiast. Her book begins with a discussion about the types of beads
and where to find them. She says consider "bead sources such as garage sales, flea
markets, and antique stores. Consider taking jewelry apart for its beads." Basic
beading terminology is explained, and also an explanation of sizing, styles, finishes,
and other basic beading supplies are explained and sources are included.
Mary shares the techniques for the style of "bead embroidery,
which generally refers to the process of incorporating beads while sewing decorative
embroidery stitches onto fabrics." Her method of "Bead Appliqué" is a creative way to
do applique that also has finished edge (with suede, felt, ribbon, and silk flowers.)
She includes various stitch instructions with very good
illustrations and photos. All are very clever and effective for design solutions.
After providing the beading instructions, Mary goes on to explain steps to hand
applique, a very useful embroidery stitch, and how to bind your quilt.
The gallery of quilts in the book are terrific, with
Mary Stori's quilts that more often than not "tell a story." With all the basic
techniques and some inspiration from the gallery, you are ready to try some of the
projects. Each of the small projects provides the reader with something fun to create
while practicing the methods Mary provides in the first part of her book.
Not having done much beading on fabric, I was given much
more confidence in my abilities to accomplish something with bead embellishment
with success. I also find that the experienced beader would find this book very
helpful, because of its wonderful illustrations and simple but informative written
instructions.
