A Heartland Album
By Kathy Delaney
Kansas City Star Books
Kathy Delaney, author of “A Heartland Album,” has a
philosophy that “appliqué is painting with fabric, and that fun is a highly important
part of quilting.”
Although there is one basic quilt project in the book
(besides some really neat pillows), it is chock full of many different techniques with
absolutely wonderful instructions. They are very clearly written with each containing
clear photos of all the steps to complete each design.
Kathy leads you through each step on how to needle turn
applique, blanket stitch applique, Celtic applique, reverse applique, pieced applique,
ruching, and trapunto. Her illustrations are many and also very detailed.
Her Prairie Album quilt that was designed for this book
is the basis for many varied projects from pillows to large quilts. The pictures of
the projects and the steps in the technique sections are so good. They just make you
want to make a project with her methods. My favorite block is #6-Faith. It includes
leaf fronds, a star, and small circles.
This is a large book (140 pages) and includes a Resource
guide for the tools she uses with her methods, and a chronological list of quilt
patterns and designs published by the Kansas City Star from 1928-2002.
Look for this book at your favorite quilt shop!
