Description:
Shoo Fly is an old favorite block and can be used alone, but is also good when mixed with other old favorites such as the Ohio Star. You may want to experiment with different color combinations and you will be delighted by the variety of quilts you can get.

Finished Size: 9"


Fabric Reqs For Block: (Example fabrics in parentheses)
  • 4" x 12" Dark (green print)
  • 4" x 24" Light (tan)
Cutting Instructions
Piece Shape # Fabric Instructions  
A  4  Light cut two 3 7/8" squares then cut in half diagonally
B  4 Dark Cut two 3 7/8" squares then cut in half diagonally.
C  1 Dark Cut one 3 ½" square.
D  4 Light cut 4 3 ½" squares.

Assembly (1/4" seam allowance throughout):
Instruction Diagram
Step 1: Sew all A triangles to a B triangle. Press seams open or toward A. (A/B unit)
Step 2: Sew an A/B unit to each side of a D patch along the B side (refer to the diagram for orientation) You will make two (A/B-D) units. Press seams open or toward B.
Step 3: Sew a D patch to each side of the C patch to make a D/C/D unit. Press seams open or toward C.
Step 4: Sew a A/B-D unit to the top and the bottom of the D/C/D unit to complete your block. Be sure to orient to match the diagram.
