Sew in the order shown below. Press the narrow light strips open
instead of in one direction. Cut the strip into 1-1/2” segments.
These strips are easier to sew if you place the already sewn strip
on the top and the unsewn strip on the bottom. This way the bulky seams
on the narrow strips are on top and easier to control. You will want to
push them out of the way as you sew.
Piece the segments together into pairs, then into fours, then eight's
and so on. Note that you will not be turning any of the segments. The
segments are pieced by stepping each one down two fabrics. You may have
to be a little careful since the seams will all be going in one direction
and may be a little harder to match than previously.
Here is a little trick that may help you to match the seams more
easily. Find the center of the strip and press the seams to the right in
one direction and the seams to the left in the opposite direction. Make
sure that when you sew the segments together, you have one from the right
side and one from the left. Since the seams will be pressed in opposite
directions, they can be easily nested and matched.
Straighten the edges as described in lesson two.
Bridging Strips:
Mark a line 1/2" from the top of the light strips. Match the raw edges to
the marked line and using a 1/4" seam piece the light strip to the bottom
of the Seminole Strip. Sew the medium strip to the top of the Seminole Strip.

Seminole Sampler Strip of the Month
Month #3 Project
Hand Towels
You will need:
- Hand towel prewashed in hot water so that any bleeding or
shrinking will occur before sewing.
- Strips of Seminole patchwork slightly longer than the width of the handtowel.
- Several one inch bridiging strips
Method #1
Cut your Seminole patchwork strip the width of the towel plus 1/2".
Cut two bridging strips the same width and sew them onto the long sides
of the Seminole patchwork strip using a 1/4" seam.
Fold the bridging strips tightly to the back wrapping the edge of
the Seminole patchwork strip and press.
Sew a bridging strip to each short end of the Seminole patchwork
strip keeping the sewn bridging strips folded in. Fold these short
strips to the back of the Seminole patchwork strip. Press well.
Pin this strip to the towel and sew in place. You can topstitch
with a straight stitch or you may prefer to use a decorative stitch.
Method #2
Cut your Seminole patchwork strip the width of the item to be decorated
plus 1/2". Cut a strip of backing the same width.
Place right sides together and sew around all edges leaving an
opening for turning. Turn and press.
This method gives you a completely finished strip, easy to applique.
However it is more bulky than the previous method.
These techniques can also be used on larger towels, washclothes,
pillowcases, sheets or as accents for an apron, shirt or sweatshirt.
