68" x 78"
I work for the Pathways Day Habilitation Program in Hanson, Massachusetts. We serve
31 adults with developmental disabilities. Our nurse of two years was leaving and we
wanted to do something very special for her. I had just a bit of extra fabric...(don't we all?!?!).
I cut numerous 6" squares. Each person needed to pick out 4 squares. I never realized how
challenging having 45 people pick out 4 squares can be. Then to add to the challenge - Cindy, the nurse,
came into work early on the ‘square selection day’! Panic set in – so I lied & told her I had all
this extra fabric was going to make a wall hanging for each of the groups. She took the bait and
picked out her four favorites squares. Also, one of our members had left the program because of a
terminal illness. We went to his house and he was able to make his selections (His is the block
with the happy face and Boston Red Sox fabrics). I made a pinwheel block from the four squares
for each person and used a black sharpie to write their name in their block. I also ended up
with 3 extra blocks or 3 blocks short, depending on how you look at it. I cut these three blocks
down and sewed them into the border. The quilt is a reminder to Cindy of how much she meant to each one of us.
